Baptism
Water in the How to read like a literature professor book, represents being reborn or Baptism. In the movie version of The Crucible, act three ends with John Proctor being found guilty while he is in the water. And John Proctor responds to the sentence by shouting that “GOD IS DEAD” and that the people are putting up a whore. While this isn’t the common Baptism, John Proctor in this case realizes how it is impossible to get the people to be rational and stop the madness of the witch hunts. Mary whom he trusted to rat out the girl’s acting had given in to the girl’s acting and named him as the devil. Standing in the water dumbfounded, he just gives up in trying to stop the madness. He later even gives in and falsely confesses in order to save his life.
Mary and the girls also inside the water, is reborn as one reunited group again that is protected and regarded as saints. Before she ran away into the water, Mary Warren was trying to prove that the girls were pretending and that the accusations were false, but when the girls started to accuse her and started pretending again she runs away into the river. Here she decides to go confess again and accuse John Proctor as the worker of the devil. And the Judges and other men not in the water, did not have a change in their mind and believed that John Proctor was the servant of the devil and sentenced him to hang.
Putting water in the book as part of symbolism the movie director attempted to show the ignorance of the people in front of power and authority. This also represents the period of McCarthyism and how those who accused random innocent people had done it out of fear of the authorities power and how it was really impossible to stop the madness.
