Religious text: The Bible
All throughout the book the content of the book has religion intertwined with the story. Many of the speak of the devil and how the devil is trying to corrupt people. Also the setting is placed in Massachusetts, the home of the Puritans, whom believe that everyone is predestined to go to hell or heaven, every person is born evil, and that everyone has to work god’s land. In the book, the court is shocked when it hears that John Proctor had only gone to church several times in the past months and also that he sometimes works in sundays. This represents how deeply religion is rooted into the town and how these things could change the people’s perspective and opinion of people. John Proctor who did not go to church very often and worked sundays was very suspicious of doing the devil’s work because it violated the Puritan ideals.
The religious symbol that the book represents in the book is the representation of Adam and Eve with Abigail and John Proctor. Here in this case Abigail is represented as the serpent that lures John Proctor into doing something that is forbidden. John Proctor is represented as Eve, unable to win the words of the serpent and commits a crime. Abigail in the book really tries to sleep with John while John at first did not comply to. However the sexuality of a young girl won the lust of a middle aged man and John committed the crime of adultery. Abigail is the serpent because she lures him into sleeping with her even though he knows consciously that it is wrong thing to do forbidden by god as a crime. And John Proctor is represented as Eve because he tries to live a normal life as a farmer however he is tricked into sleeping with someone other than his wife. And as a consequence John Proctor is not believed by his wife at certain times and there is an cold, awkward atmosphere in the house with the two of them.

Author's purpose
The author put the symbolism of religion because of humanism part of the scene. It is natural that humans make mistakes even if it might be cheating on one’s wife. The important part of making a mistake is to figure out why it is a mistake, and try to improve upon the mistake. John Proctor after committing adultery with Abigail, in guilt confesses to his wife and tries to amend for his actions by being nice to her. Abigail however, does not repent nor does she recognize that she made a mistake. She does not understand or perceive her fault in her action and only tries to revenge on the person who punished her mistake. The author is really pinpointing how wrong Abigail’s actions are in trying to revenge rather than repent.
